Mabuhay, friends!

I am terrible at readathons.

I just wanted to get that out of the way so you don’t have any high expectations of me. I am terrible at readathons and it hurts my little perfectionist heart. One of the main reasons is that I’m a mood reader, and another being, I don’t really have very many books or the money to purchase them whenever I want. But now that I have access to a library, I want to take full advantage of the resources and read the books that I never really could!

Avatar The Last Page Turner is a two week readathon (1 – 14 August) hosted by youtubers: KJ Reads Pages, Positive Writer, Ben Reads Books, and Kaela Clifton. I decided to join this readathon because of how much Avatar: The Last Airbender means to me. The show taught me so much about storytelling, and compassion; it’s one show that I could rewatch many times.

You can keep up with the hosts and the ATLA readathon updates on the Twitter account @avatar_turner14.

For the Water Tribe book, I am choosing The White Girl by Tony Birch. A book about family, the author narrates the story of Odette whose grand-daughter is in danger of being taken away by welfare authorities because of being fair-skinned. Now, this is a history I am not very familiar with, so I hope to get my first introduction of Australia’s aboriginal history.

My Earth Kingdom book will be from the author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Depending on time, I will be choosing between Americanah and We Should All Be Feminists.

My Fire Nation book will be Dark And Deepest Red by Anna-Marie McLemore. I have a soft spot for re-tellings but this is the first re-telling of Hans Christian Anderson’s Red Shoes that I have come across.

For the Air Nomads I have chosen The Black Tides of Heaven by JY Yang. The cover itself radiates big Air Nomad energy, wouldn’t you say? This is a novella that I have been meaning to read for a while!

The optional group book for the readathon is Blood Heir by Amelie Wen Zhao. Luckily I already have a copy of this book, so I decided to have this for the Avatar State prompt.
