Today is an exciting day because I’m reviewing the highly anticipated finale to The Oremere Chronicles by Helen Scheuerer. If Heart of Mist drew you in for its beautiful worldbuilding and Reign of Mist held you captive with its political warfare and a power-hungry antagonist, then War of Mist will break you with its characters and their fight. War of Mist is a tearfully satisfying end to The Oremere Chronicles, but will definitely hook readers to Scheuerer’s writing.
WAR OF MIST BY HELEN SCHEUERER
BOOK THREE OF THE OREMERE CHRONICLES
War is here.
Toxic mist drives all life to the brink of destruction and the conqueror queen, Ines, has her talons in the kings of the realm.
Bleak, having discovered her true heritage, must now scour the lands for the one thing that might save them all.
But the search is a treacherous one – and it will push her to the very limits of endurance.
Amidst secrets, lies and the intricacies of battle, Bleak and her companions learn just how far they’ll go for the ones they love. But will it be enough?
As deadly forces grapple for power across the continents, families, friends and allies unite to take one final stand.
War of Mist is the finale in The Oremere Chronicles, a high fantasy series which is an underrated gem that ever YA fantasy lover needs to pick up. In the final book, the plot lines from War and Reign come together to the final climax – the war against Ines’ queendom. Prices are paid, sacrifices made, and allies have broken.
Reading War of Mist was a personal experience for me. I had been with the characters since book one and have watched them grow throughout the story arc has made me not only fond of them, but I have come to love these characters as though they were real people. Having known the vulnerabilities and love of each character, it made me proud to watch them grow into leaders and warriors. The difficulty of reading the finale was knowing that I would eventually have to say goodbye to one of these characters.
Beneath the magic and the war, War of Mist is a story about rebuilding from the broken and moving forward. Many of the characters in the books carried a shameful secret that kept them locked in a cage. This book shows us that moving forward is not as simple as forgetting the past or pretending it didn’t happen but to actively change present actions to keep the future from suffering. It is choosing not to remain in the claws of your past.
This series is one that I know readers will choose to read over and over again to experience not just the fantastic worldbuilding but to immerse themselves in the diverse lives portrayed from book one. If not for that I am certain that the storyline of the underdogs and their quest for justice will draw readers to this book.
