TOP TEN TUESDAY: LITERARY CHARACTERS WHO REMIND ME OF MY MOTHER

Happy birthday, mama!

Today’s post is a personal one. I wanted to write a special note to my mother who has been my inspiration, and no matter how bleak things got, she has never failed to stand by me. Honestly, thank you for being so chill about how effing weird I get when the mood strikes me, mumshie.

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.wedding3

🌺 Henri from The Heart of Mist

A leader with a no-nonsense attitude.

If there is any character that could be my mother’s twit, it would be the warrior queen of the Valian. My mother has always been the kind of woman who is ready to fight for and protect her family. Although she may look tough on the outside, both my mother and Henri are soft for the ones they love.

🌺 Miryem from Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

Practical, level-headed, and intelligent

Just like Miryem my mother is not one to sit back when a situation turns bad instead she always does her best to turn any situation to her advantage. She is quick thinking with just enough cunning to make people waver. When it comes to taking care of their family, both Miryem and mother push the boundaries to provide for their family’s needs.

🌺 Maia Tamarin from Spin The Dawn

Family-oriented, and passionate

In early 2000, my mother moved to a country where she neither knew the language or the culture. Not only had she to live in a foreign country without her husband but my mother also took in my three cousins. So, there she was, a young Filipino woman with six kids, and a strange new town. The risk Maia took to travel to the palace in the guise of a boy just so she could take care of her family reminded me so much of my mother. I will never cease to be amazed by mother’s strength.

🌺 Molly Weasley from the Harry Potter series

Generous, and welcoming

When I asked my cousin which literary character reminded her of my mother, she named Molly Weasley. My cousin recalls her time in our old home when my mom opened her house to my cousin and her brothers. She likens this to the way Molly Weasley welcomed Harry in to the family and became a second mother to him.

🌺 Sally Jackson from The Percy Jackson series

Selfless

Sally Jackson, Percy Jackson’s mother, is who my sister chose. She says, “it’s because Sally Jackson always put her child first, Percy Jackson. And she was willing to sacrifice her life just so that her kid would be safe. And mama has been so sacrificing ever since.”
