Bookworms are a species on their own. If it’s not hiding in our blanket forts, we’re out terrorizing good citizens because we found a bookstore coupon tucked in our elbow creases.
It really isn’t as bad as it sounds as long as you offer them some pastry afterwards.
Hardcore bookworms – are there really any soft-cored ones? – obsess about books day in and day out translating our little ticks into habits, and creating war zones of bookish discussions. And while I do these little bits, there are few bookworm habits that I don’t do.
So, take a seat and read on! You can judge me for these if you’d like.
PRE-ORDER NEW RELEASES
As tempting as the pre-order goodies are, I’ve never pre-ordered a book before! I’m a very indecisive person who barely decide if she wants oatmeal and cereal for breakfast much less decide on buying a brand new shiny!
BUYING SEVERAL EDITIONS OF A FAVOURITE BOOK
I wish! This is one of those moments where I look at my wallet and beg for a miracle. I’m kidding. I don’t really buy redone covers for books because I’m pretty sure I’d be too afraid to read it and I don’t like having books solely for display purposes.
NOT MARKING THE BOOKS
Yes, I’m a filthy bookworm.
Bookworms will probably hate me for this, I bet. I highlight and take notes in my books because I like to look back on old books and sort of…get a feel of how I felt back then. Re-reading highlighted passages and seeing if they still make me feel the same way. It’s more of a sentimental habit.
LISTENING TO AUDIOBOOKS
I’ll admit, I’m actually scared of audiobooks! I don’t know if I’ll be able to concentrate as well as I do with a physical book. Will I need to constantly rewind back to one part? What if I don’t understand the narrator very well?
There’s a lot to be considered here, guys. I’m not completely averse to audiobooks though, it’s just that right now I don’t see the need for them.
PARTICIPATE IN A BUDDY READ
I see many bloggers and bookworms doing this! It sounds like a wonderful experience but do I have the right emotions to invest, not just in a book, but in a fellow bookworm? It’s a double monstrosity aimed at my poor, little heart.
No, but seriously, I do plan on having a buddy read someday when the worry of a thesis is not looming over my head.
COORDINATE MY BOOKSHELVES
Rainbow shelves? Colour coordinated? Genre coordinated? Funko pops? Enamel Pins?
No, no, no. My bookshelf is simply a stack of paperbacks proudly filling the air with their musty page smells (what is the scent of a page called?) There’s only one bookshelf in the house which also houses several knick-knacks besides the books. It’s simply a cluttered space of old, mismatched books.
KEEP TRACK OF UPCOMING RELEASES
I can barely remember my anniversary, please. Perhaps it’s just me but I don’t get as hyped about new releases as everyone else. I’m always late to the party anyways. Unless it’s for a review copy, I don’t keep track of upcoming books. I might add them to my Goodreads TBR – if I REALLY am interested – but other than that, nope!
COLLECT BOOKISH MERCHANDISES
There are so many wonderful merchandises on sale out there! My favourites are the bookish jewelry and tote bags, but I haven’t bought any for myself.
For one, since I read a lot of indie books – ones that aren’t as popular – I don’t find bookish merchandises related to these indie books. Though there are a lot for the classic books I love, so there’s that!
Whatever you choose to do as a bookworm, you go you! Just make sure you return your library books on time and wipe down your shelves every week; keep your Kindle always charged and candles away from books.
Disobey and I’m calling the Pages & Ink Police on you.
Share with me some of your bookworm habits! Or is there one that you don’t relate to?
Love this!
I personally like having audiobooks while I am driving. But if you like to take notes while you’re reading then it might not be the way for you.

Yep! Driving and audiobooks sounds like a very good idea though! I might give that a try 😀

Hahahahaha LOVE THIS! So relate Cam… I don’t preorder either. Also I kind of HATE audiobooks?! Well maybe hate I see a strong word but they are hard to concentrate on and take much longer to listen to… it’s only if you have a commute or something that audiobooks work to me. Also the narrators are hit or miss to me. I LOVE that you write in your books! I like doing that but digitally or in my goodreads… (which others frown on 😭so I don’t do as much as I’d like).

I don’t think I’d be able to listen to audionooks even on commute! It’s too noisy haha
Aaaw no, they’re your books! If you want to write in them, do it! Or you could use sticky notes!! 😀

I don’t do a lot of these, either! Pretty much anything that would cost me too much – buying multiple copies of the same book and bookish merchandise, I just can’t justify it. I have recently started listening to audiobooks, mostly memoir-type books or rereads, because I am scared of missing something important!

So glad I’m not the only one..?? I think twice before buying ANY book much less merchandises. My reasoning is that I just don’t have the liberty to spend that much money. Oh, how’s the audiobook experience so far?

I love audiobooks for re-reads! Meaning, I’ve already read the book, then a couple years later, I think to myself, hey, I want to read that again. If they have an audiobook copy at the library, I’m good for go.
I agree that the audiobook reader is key to a good audiobook experience.

Oh, that’s a good idea! I’ve been meaning to do a re-read for Wuthering Heights, so this sounds like a good way to ease into audiobooks! Thank you for commenting!

I just discovered how much FUN marking up your book can be. It’s now MY book and my experience, and when I re-read I can look back on my mind along with the world. So much fun! And I am dirt poor. Like I don’t even know if I could afford quality dirt, I have so few shiny books that they look strange and unloved on my bookshelf if I didn’t destroy them!

Yes, yes, yes! i’m always delighted to find readers who take the joy in annotating their books! I love the worn out look of books, you know? There’s something so inviting about them haha

I don’t do a lot of these either! I feel like audiobooks could never hold my attention span, and separating books in a series to color-code my shelves would stress me out 😬

I don’t think I even have enough colours on my shelf to coordinate them that way haha

I do consider myself a bookworm, but I don’t do all of these either. I rarely qualify for pre-order merch anyway, so I really only pre-order books by authors that are auto-buy anyway or if it’s part of a series that I just feel like I HAVE to finish. My bookshelves are a mess, I haven’t listened to more than one audiobook because concentrating is an issue for me as well and I am terrible at keeping track of anything these days hahahaha However, my books all look pretty fresh. I put sticky notes in some, but i wouldn’t actually write in a book, I think.
Also, YAS – do a buddy read! With the right person, it is the most fun!!!

I didn’t know you had to qualify for pre-order merchandises! Ok, that’s new to me!
Yessss, I’m just waiting for summer to participate in a buddy read haha thank you for commenting, Kat!

Well, a lot of pre-order campaigns are US or UK only, so that always plays into it. Some authors say you could still send in your receipt, even if you are international, but there’s no guarantee you will get it.

Oh that’s a lovely post, I can relate to some of these too 🙂 I rarely pre-order books, unless when it’s one of my favorite authors of all times and I have the same fear about audiobooks, of not being able to focus on it at all somehow? I don’t know, haha. 🙂
Lovely post! x

Ahaha what a great post! I don’t preorder many books either haha, if I really want to purchase a book, I’ll just do it when it’s been released! Preorders make me nervous for some reason 😂 I used to be the same with audiobooks, but this year I’ve actually really gotten into them! I still struggle with staying concentrated 100% of the time, but it’s great to multitask during something that doesn’t take as much thinking haha. And narrators are also a hit or miss. But I do recommend giving them a try! 🙈 This was such a fun post!

Same here! In spite of the many Goodreads reviews, I still get scared haha…Which audiobook would you recommend for a beginner?

What is pre-ordering? Really, I’ve so many books to read that I never managed to pre-oreder something. Another thing that bugs me is that a lot of pre-order contain swag and I would love to have that swag, but I mostly order with Amazon from my country. Adding the ship cost from US (since is usually from there) is just too much, And maybe some doesn’t even ship internetionally.
Neither I buy multiple book copies because *rude myself is coming out be ready* for me is: spending money unecessary when you can actually buy another new book that you might enhoy as much as your beloved one. Unless you’re some kind of collectioner or the beloved book is so ruined that s behind repair… well, I can get that.
I mark my books too! I use a light pencil fro drawing with a color that match the main cover’s theme.
But I collect merchandise. I’m culprit of that. I use them a lot, mostly candle, bag and pins, going around showing them like: “I’m a bookworm, fight me!” (what.)

Yeah, shipping fees are a bugger. Ordering from Amazon hurts my heart. I mainly order Kindle books from there and physical books from Book Depository. I mostly just wait for cheaper paperbacks 😐 Yessss, I don’t buy newer copy of book unless the old ones are completely tattered.
Oooh that’s so cute! Using a colored pencil to the cover’s theme. I’d love to see your book markings!
Hahaha which are your favourite stores to buy merchs from?

I’ve to say that my first sellers are actually bookish boxes. If I’d to buy every single thing as a single item everytime… I cannot think about it. But for single merchs I love Literary Emproium pins, Ink and Wonder and Happy Hello Co. bookmarks

Ah, thank you! I’ve heard of Literary Emporium. They have such cool merchs!

I adore this post and it’s so relatable, I want to cry. I feel the same about pre-orders, I keep seeing those campaigns and I’m like ‘omg, I want that and that one and that one’ and sadly I don’t have enough money for all of them and most of the time I end up not buying any of them. Such an indecisive person -.-
I keep my pages clean, so this one isn’t something I can relate to. But that’s probably the only one.
Lovely post! ❤

Aaaw haha please don’t cry! That’s true…even if I do want to preorder, I don’t have the money for it! And let’s not forget the shipping fees!
Thank you so much 😀

Ok, I preorder ALL the books, haha! But I don’t listen to audiobooks? I do listen to podcasts, but I’d rather just read a book.

Ok soooo I don’t pre-order books either. I can’t because I don’t like hardbacks and most of the time if you pre-order books they come in hardback form. I can’t stand dust jacket and plus, I’m a paperback kinda gal 😉 I’m also terrified of audio books for the same reasons as you, I also am a faster reader with physical books. So I also don’t read eBooks and I also don’t have a kindle.
I do collect multiple editions at least in my head I do. At the moment the only multiple editions I have are The Mortal Instruments box set (I’m dying for The Infernal Devices box set) but my while family had a go at me when I got the box set. I did make a point of saying ‘it’s my money’ but alas…they were not impressed. At all. 😥
I don’t do rainbow shelves or anything coordinated. They organised at the moment awfully because I have three shelves and no bookcase. But when I do organise them I just do it how I found appealing, or I’ll arrange them according to where I want them for me to easily reach them etc.

That’s a good point! I prefer paperbacks as well! So if I do want the book I’ll have to wait for the paperback to come out which isn’t so bad since it gives me time to think over the book & whether I really want it!
Oh no! Don’t let them get to you! My dad always wonders why I buy so many books and was on my case for a while. You do you, girl! Aaw, I cleaned out my bookshelf this weekend and arranged them by genre. That’s about as creative as I can get with them. I don’t like the idea of splitting up series should I colour coordinate my shelves =p

I can’t cope with splitting up series! It’s just not ok with me, feels too weird. And yeah well when I get my own place I’ll have a field day, bookshelves everywhere haha

I definitely relate to some of these! I ALWAYS write/highlight in my books and I love it. Seeing the sticky tabs I leave in books always makes me happy and reminds me of some of my fave parts of books.

No candles and merch for me xD but I wonder if it’s because I’m international? It would be silly to buy, knowing what they cost. I have pre-ordered once or twice maybe, but it was for books that I was eagerly waiting for, in the middle of the series. Audiobooks though! The point is to rest your eyes! Last week I was cleaning the house and finished 4 books in a day xD that reason enough for you? 😀
Good post 🙂

Hahahaha look at you, selling me on the idea of audiobooks! I do actually want to give it a try! Any recommendations?
The only candles I have are the ones I won in a giveaway! I love the smell and would like to have a bit more but even domestic ones are quite expensive for me!

I love this post! There are so many points that I agree with. I have pre ordered only one book so far, multiple edition is something I don’t even want to do and I’ve never participated in buddy reads though I think I would love to.
I used to dislike audiobooks but then I fell in love with Geekerella’s audiobook so they’re not bad, depends on the narrator. I still prefer print books because audio books take up so much time and I can read a book in 4-5 hours average.
You do you! Highlighting and marking books is fine, I just don’t feel like doing that 🙂

I very, very rarely preorder anything- so I relate there. And I just can’t afford to get several editions of the same book- who can lol?! Honestly, I highlight and write in books too- and I don’t feel guilty cos I picked up this habit studying literature- and I also think it adds a layer of sentimentality to a book. hehe I can’t keep on top of release dates either and I’ve done a buddy read only twice (it was great fun, but yeah, it requires a bit more investment and I can’t always commit) Awesome post- really relatable!

Ah, I feel the same. I bought a secondhand of Steinbeck’s East of Eden. The previous owner had written in the margins and while I was annoyed with it at first, I eventually came to love it because it felt like I was reading along with someone else and it was fun knowing their thoughts!

Wow, this post made me feel 10x better about my bookish self. I can relate to all of these topics! Audio books definitely aren’t my thing, I never preorder, and I definitely don’t buy a book I already have for a different cover! (Unless it’s an F.Scott Fitzgerald book, then I’m guilty).

I relate to so many of these! Especially the audiobook one, I have yet to listen to any and I’m kinda scared cause I don’t know where to start… And I don’t know whether they’d be my thing. I have yet to join a buddy read as well, but I’m definitely tempted by the idea! As far as pre-orders go, I’ve only preordered ACOWAR so far- being the third in the series, it makes sense. I’m not that big on preorders either, but I’m willing to do it if I really love the author/ the series!
Great post!!

The only thing i ever pre-order is new Stephen King books.
I can’t stand audio books because i tend to forget they are on, wander away then when i’m back in the room i freak out cuz “omg, who’s talking?”…
My bookshelf is a disaster. It looks like something exploded on it…
